Has anyone ever wondered about America’s Obesity problem and whether it could be solved or not? American is a very obese country! According to the Food Research and Action Center chart located online, “In the US: 68.5% of adults are overweight or obese whereas 34.9% are obese, and lastly 31.8% of children and adolescents are overweight or obese and other children are 16.9% obese; of these children who are low income and overweight and obese 30.4% are preschoolers” (Carroll). That is just way too many people overweight! The government should have some control over our diets because America has the unhealthiest food, food production is out of control, and many kids need better calorie control.
In the first place, compared to all other countries, America has the unhealthiest food. People from other countries will come here, eat our food and get sick because of how unhealthy the food is for them. Why is that? All of our food is toxic and most of it makes us obese or bigger in width, but it is just not our food that is at fault. According to Jim Latham from McMaster University, “…obesity follows… the "toxic environment" created by present-day eating and exercise patterns,” (Latham 1). “There are thirty-one million kids who eat school lunches,” according to the article Are Federal Calorie Limits Leaving Kids Hungry? The article also says that with these new calorie limits are not filling up kids, that it is “…not enough food for them to be left full” (Allison). Another author, Daniel P. Jones, points out that it was “…feared that new regulations would mean an increase in wasted, unwanted food, but studies show this is not the case” (Jones). Additionally, “…updated nutrition standards for the National School Lunch Program can succeed in helping student eat healthier…”
