According to the psychologist and researcher, Dr. DeAngelo, obesity is a major issue in the United States because it is “the second leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States, and according to the American Journal of Public Health in 2013, obesity accounts for approximately 18 percent of all deaths in the United States” (DeAngelo, 2015). Obesity is a chronic condition in which an individual carries an excess and unhealthy amount of fat that far exceeds their recommended weight. It greatly affects the health of an individual and costs the United States billions of dollars in health care costs, which is why it is an issue that America should improve on and the way to accomplish that is to figure out what causes a person to become obese so that solutions are created to tackle this issue. The three main causes of obesity are poor nutrition/unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, and lack of education and awareness of obesity. Research shows that more education on obesity will help lessen the death tolls in the United States due to obesity because individuals will be more aware of how obesity greatly affects one’s health and well-being, learn how to improve their diets and have better eating habits, and learn how to exercise more properly which as stated before, are the causes of obesity.
