Many people know that obesity is a huge issue, not only in America; but, worldwide. However, many people do not know and understand that most of our obesity rates come from our younger generations. Majority of our findings on obesity come from our adolescent years of life. According to a study from Kansas City, Missouri, the research team reported adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities are at higher risk for obesity (Children’s Mercy Hospital, 2016). Within this paper, I will to explain why adolescents are obese (causes), what can be done to help reduce the number within this age group, and inform the parents steps they can take and how they can help children battle this horrific issue of America. Often, people turn to dieting. There are several different dieting strategies available for one to try. John P. Foreyt discuss two types of diets, low fat and low carbohydrates (2010). While discussing the two diets, Foreyt provides great detail and adequate explanations. He then goes on to explain why he believes the one diet is better than the other. Low fat diets typically restrict the percentage of fat that is being consumed by an individual to less than thirty percent (Foreyt, 2010). This form of diet is what most people turn to and is the most ideal way to go about losing weight. When people consume too much of the saturated fats, issues begin with obesity (Foreyt, 1010). Most of the fats in our foods comes from our meats, fried foods, and cheeses. This is hard to cut out of our diets because we also need a good source of protein to stay healthy and these foods can provide these nutrients (Foreyt, 2010).
