Can fast food be the cause of obesity? Are we digging our own graves by the over excess of fast food eating? In today’s society, we have a fast food restaurant on almost every corner. Along with that, they have big signs with new foods on discount for almost one dollar. This makes it even harder for those who want to diet and eat healthy, because the food is very convenient and takes no time to order. How many times were you hungry but did not want to go sit down at a restaurant because they might take too long or the food may cost too much and settles for fast food? This has been a major factor to obesity. Stevens stated “obesity results from an imbalance of calorie intake and expenditure defined by World Health Organization as a disease whereby the excess body fat has accumulated to the point where the health of the individual may be adversely affected.” There are multiple kinds of fats; such as, Tran’s fats, unsaturated fats, saturated fats, etc. The worst of them all is the trans-fat. They are created when hydrogen is added to liquid oils so that they stay a solid at room temperature. Did you know that your body is supposed to have at least 20% to 25% of daily intake? Well did you know that some of our famous fast food items exceeds that percentage with one meal? OAC states that “McDonalds Big Mac: 540 calories and 29 g of fat, Burger King Whopper: 670 calories and 40 g of fat, Wendy’s Bacon Deluxe Double: 880 calories and 52 g of fat, and Taco Bell Nachos Bell Grande: 770 calories and 24 g of fat.” As you can see, these fast food items are like three meals in one. This is highly unacceptable to put your body through so much harm. Vigarello stated that “Data from 2009-2010 indicates that over 78 million U.S. adults and about 12.5 million children and adolescents are obese.
