Chris McCandless is a hiker and someone who wants to travel around to see the mountains. He was challenging himself to see if he could try and travel by not letting people know, but that failed. The article “Death of an Innocent” by Jon Krakauer portrays Chris McCandless in an idiotic and careless way because he doesn't let anyone know when he leaves for his little trip to the mountains. If he had told people they could have known he needed help, and maybe he didn't have to die. Chris is a very outgoing person. He was abused as a child so he didn't have such a nice childhood, but he wanted to prove to himself that he can be on his own. This is why he wanted to travel. Chris McCandless was a traveler who wanted to explore the world. He left in April of 1992. To start fresh and to just go on a little journey, Chris carried very lightly and that is what Gallien, the man who gave him a ride into Alaska, noticed. “Alex’s backpack appeared to weigh only 25 or 30 pounds, which struck Gallien, an accomplished outdoorsman, as an improbably light load for a three-month sojourn in the backcountry, especially so early in the spring.” This shows how careless and idiotic Chris was because when you travel for so many days you are supposed to pack enough for the time you're gone and he is clearly under packed. He needed to be more prepared, Chris had a map but then he left it in the truck he didn't even have a compass. When Chris got rid of the map he was unaware that he could have gone a safer route to get out of Alaska. However, he went back to the bus and eventually died. Some may argue that Chris is noble and brave because he went on a trip to the Mountain all by himself and he survived with barely food and almost no new
