Do you ever think about how your actions, past, present and future might change your future? The novel Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck, mainly focuses on two characters, Lennie Small and George Milton. The two travel together everywhere and are strongly dependent on one another, but are both very different. The men go to work on a ranch in Soledad, with the dream if getting their own place and ¨livin’ off the fatta the land.¨ Lennie suffers from a lack of intelligence and doesn't know right from wrong until he's done something bad, he is also very strong, and when the traits combine, they set the stage for disaster. Lennie and George talk about the ranch and Lennie thinks he lost his work ticket, when Lennie takes his hand out of his pocket, George asks him “What'd you take outa that pocket?¨ Lennie replied smartly with “ain´t a thing in my pocket, (page 5)¨ after a few more smart remarks, George finally gets Lennie tell him that heś got a mouse and give it to him. Once George got the mouse, he threw it across the pool of water into the brush. When he asked Lennie what he wanted with a dead mouse, Lennie said ¨I could pet it with my thumb when while we walked along,¨ (page 6). Steinbeck having Lennie carry mice in his pocket, shows that he is lonely. If Lennie wasn't lonely, then he wouldńt be carrying mice around with him. George had Lennie go find firewood and when he came back with the wood, George noticed that his pants were wet and that he had something in his hand, the mouse. Once again, George had to argue with Lennie in order to get the mouse and when he took it from him, Lennie crouched down by a log and cried. Lennie crying over a mouse is another example that he is lonely and lacks intelligence. With his amount of strength and his lack of knowing what is right and what is wrong, he would kill the mice without meaning to, he said ¨I´d pet them and pretty soon they´d bite my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead¨ (page 10).
