Posted on the home page of the district website and in every building is:
The mission of the Name Omitted School District is to inspire each student to be a life-long learner, pursue excellence, exhibit strength of character and contribute positively to a global society. With such a lofty goal a teacher would assume that working in such a district would be the best place to work. The characteristics are the reasons that most teachers go into education. Unfortunately, the district has become caustic. I use caustic because in chemistry it means a chemical burning from a substance with a high pH. Teachers are forced to attend meetings that frequently prove useless and time consuming leading to resentment. Making matters worse is that building administrators insist on running these meetings on a weekly basis with no little or no preparation. The original thinking behind the meetings was for them to be teacher led and discussing ways to improve student learning through implementation of engaging activities. This would have allowed the teachers to build a positive connection. The current working model has led to resentment and isolation. Teachers literally spend their days in their rooms with little to no interaction among our peers. It has become so disgusting that a teacher was written for insubordination for stating that the students would be taking a test on the day that a survey was to be pushed out. There is an agenda to be a technology district even it is to the demise of the students. Administration wants the students using the district supplied IPads all the time. The administration wants the kids to do everything from taking notes to taking tests using technology. Even when I suggest that students prefer to do notetaking with pen and paper or want to read a text book, I get accused of being anti-technology. I hold a master’s degree in computer science, have worked on computers most of my life and I am anti-technology. The only meaningful contributions the administration wants made fit their agenda on technology. If you can tweet your students doing anything then you are an exceptional teacher. It does not matter that the students cannot solve a real problem but what matters is that it got tweeted. I get kids in science class who cannot read a graph but because they posed for a picture “working” in math class they are super students. The entire philosophy is a joke. Smoke and mirrors as people
