This weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the musical production of "Once," based on the book written by Edna Walsh with the musical’s basis taken from the 2007 film of the same name, directed by John Carney. I had the great opportunity to view this musical at 2 p.m. on December 28, 2014 at the Winspear Opera House.
“Once” is a musical that takes place on the streets of Dublin, Ireland. Guy, an Irish musician and Girl, who is from the Czech Republic, share a passion for music. Over the time span of a week, Girl persuades Guy to believe in the power of his music and his love for his ex-girlfriend, the woman who inspired his songs in the first place. Guy is a musician who spends his days fixing vacuum cleaners in a shop with his dad. In the night, however, Guy plays his songs in pubs around his neighborhood. He is on the brink of giving up music completely. Luckily, Girl, enters the bar, hears him play and refuses to let him abandon his guitar, because she believes he is very talented. In a turn of events, Girl’s vacuum is in need of repair. Guy fixes the vacuum, and to compensate him for his services, she plays him a tune on a piano. As a result, Girl and Guy develop a friendship. The climax occurs, when Guy insists Girl to spend her last night in Ireland. In the end, Girl decides to leave for the Czech Republic. Guy cannot find her to say goodbye before his flight to London. The action is resolved when Guy’s father gives him money to help him get settled in London to begin his journey to become a singer. Before leaving for England, Guy buys the Girl a piano to remember him by. The plot was very comprehensible and believable. “Once” had a captivating love story, great songs, and compelling characters who each had a fascinating backstory. The play was not cliché and it did not turn out like I expected it
