Chapter 12 introduced the student to key concepts in organic chemistry. The first type of organic compound studied was alkanes. Alkanes are a type of hydrocarbon. This means that alkanes either have carbon-carbon or carbon-hydrogen singles bonds. Since alkanes only have single bonds, they are referred to as saturated hydrocarbons. Alkanes can present themselves as acyclic or cyclic. Acyclic alkanes have only chains of carbon atoms while cyclic alkanes have carbons that form one or more rings and are called cycloalkanes. When different alkanes have the same molecular formula they are referred to as isomers. Alkanes are non polar molecules that have weak intermolecular forces and are incapable of hydrogen bonding. Since they are non
