The purpose of this essay is to inform what are the "Leadership Styles" in the Army. CIO states, "Leadership is the ability of an individual or a group of people to influence and guide followers or members of an organization, society or team." (Barney, 2023). Therefore, an individual can apply different styles that will help him to influence others. These leadership styles are Authoritative, Affiliative, Democratic, Coaching, Coercive, and Pacesetting.

My personal leadership philosophy is more compassionate than I realized. As shown in Exercise one, which analyzes if you focus more on being power-oriented, achievement-oriented, and concerned with human welfare. My scores for that exercise came out to be: Column One- 18, Column Two- 29, and Column Three- 25. This means I have a strong concern for human welfare than being power-oriented and achievement-oriented, but I am more achievement-oriented than power-oriented. This was interesting as I always thought I was power-oriented because I like to be in charge and not bossed around.

Over my twenty-year career, the core aspects of my leadership philosophy have been constant while other parts evolved with me, as I changed jobs and responsibilities and while I matured and gained new perspectives. Mahatma Gandhi said it best, “You have to be the change that you want to see in the world.” In keeping with the military’s practice of conducting after action reviews after military exercises, I hope my written leadership philosophy will become a contract to keep me in check and ensure I “walked the talk.”
1. My philosophy of leadership is about collaboration and teamwork. Respecting and treating everyone the same, is key to supporting a good team atmosphere. I believe when a leader puts effort and care into assisting others, then their peers and followers will naturally want to support them. It is also important for a leader to recognize, that advocacy must never become so important that the critical elements of leadership are neglected (e.g. policy enforcement, command support, etc...).
Richard and Elder (2008) define critical thinking as “The art of analyzing and evaluating thinking with a view to improving it”. In this research paper, I will cover the importance of being proficient on applying critical and creative thinking process. Moreover, I will provide assertive examples using Major General (MG) David Petraeus’s critical thinking and problem solving process experiences during the invasion of Mosul, Iraq. The Mosul’s invasion was full of suitable and deprived decisions.

Critical thinking plays a large role in determining success. To be able to analyze a situation and further understand it, I must define the content and evaluate it. By first defining the content, I provide myself with a general understanding of what I am learning. Once I have defined whatever data it may be, evaluating it gives me the opportunity to go in depth and learn more. This is a key component to success because I expand my knowledge as well as give others the opportunity to share theirs.
