Dr. Erika V. Burley received her bachelor’s degree from Boston University and her Doctorate of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) from Southern Illinois University. She completed her general practice residency at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Administration Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina, and then served as an associate in Fayetteville, North Carolina, for three-and-a-half years. Following this, Dr. Burley established her current practice in Charlotte, assuming a Cotswold dental practice that had been in existence for nearly thirty years. She is a member of several prestigious dental organizations, including the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the North Carolina Dental Society, and the Charlotte Dental Society.

The Planned Respite outing was successful The WSP also discussed strategies with Heaven on how to appropriately communication with her peers and foster parents. Students were divided in groups of three, with two students setting up and one student coaching them through the process. My job was to ensure the students were following the correct steps and stopping and correcting any mistakes. It was important to educate them on correct infection control protocols to reduce potential risk for cross-contamination and instill good habits from the beginning. I also assisted in helping them identify oral landmarks and tooth numbering. Most of my children in my class mainly have trouble focusing on one simple task and ranges from one boy whom is only able to walk with assistance. Sounds like a lot of responsibility… Well it is and surprisingly I loved today! It was such a cool feeling to be the “big guy” in charge. Although not all the children will sleep, so for those children activities will have already been setup for them to do. I always ensure that I encourage children to use the toilet to allow them to become independent. I also demonstrated to the children about what is happening in order for them to follow instructions. I was aware of all the children’s dietary needs, allergies and religious beliefs. I worked in partnership with the children’s parents and carers to find out what food their child can and cannot have.
