As a pacu (post-anesthesia care unit) RN, you are responsible to guide your patient to consciousness after a surgical procedure. There are a number of tasks you will be responsible for in our post operative unit. You will perform tasks including: checking your patient’s vital signs, changing or adjusting bandages, administer medications, educating your patient’s for anticipated discharge. You will need a great attention to detail and will need excellent skills working with people. You are expecting to counsel and educate your patients as well as provide emotional support. Your patients depend on you to have a good bedside manner as well as medical expertise.

I chose to utilize a two step process for my training program. The first part was to be at home on the new orientees own time. This included software on the hospitals documentation system and practice stations. Individuals have all different learning styles therefore I attempted to accommodate everyone. The orientees were able to access the software using a laptop, desktop, tablet or phone. I would provide explicit instructions on these at home labs as well as my contact for any issues that may arise. The software program would give them the documentation and careplan piece of the objectives. The orientees were to bring a copy of their work to the workshop for us to review. In my objectives, I listed familiarity to the operating room and procedures. I feel it is important for the staff to understand how the procedure is being performed to be able to assess and instruct the patient properly. Therefore, I set up a surgical skills lab.
