Poverty has an alarming effect on all aspects of people’s lives, from emotional health to their political views. There is no denying poverty is detrimental to the development of a community, and can severely limit economic and social growth. But the effects of poverty are deeply-rooted from generation to generation, making ascending social classes extremely difficult. One factor that aids in social mobility is education, but many children living in poverty lack the motivation to succeed in school. A gripping and devouring force, poverty affects an individual’s societal views, intellectual development, and future success. A person’s behavior and emotions are affected by their environment, and those living in poverty are no exception. But before discussing the psychological impact poverty has on people, it is important to define poverty. According to Webster’s dictionary, poverty is traditionally defined as “the state of one with insufficient resources”; but poverty also carries a certain kind of social weight to it, meaning poverty is sometimes synonymous with inferiority. Children in poverty are deeply affected and scarred by the effects poverty has on their lives. Constricting and restrictive, poverty has a strong grasp on people’s lives from childhood to adulthood. An individual's personal opinion and worldview can be attested to their socioeconomic upbringing, as the 2016 U.S. Presidential election shows. Getting a decent job and being able to provide for a family are both simple and attainable goals for a majority of Americans, but for nearly 43 million, such achievements are almost impossible. To better ourselves and our nation, poverty in America must be addressed and addressed swiftly.
