In Literature the contrast between ethos and pathos can be found in the novel Paradise Lost by John Milton. Ethos and Pathos can be found between two of the main characters in the novel which is God and Satan. “God allows evil, because goodness springs from overcoming evil and gives meaning to our suffering (Milton, 9).” This theme is key, because obedience to God is considered the highest good and God is testing those who oppose such as Satan to see if the evil he causes can be balanced out and turned into good which shows God’s ethos characteristics. Satan is so passionate about his ways that he believes it is better to rule in Hell than not to be free and be a follower in Heaven rather than a leader in Hell. It’s God’s will that everything is happening, therefore he already knowns that the fall of man is coming. “Behold Me then, Me for him, life for life I offer. On Me let thine anger fall (Milton, 62).” Jesus volunteers to redeem humans, life for life in order to bring back the balance and clarity in Heaven. An example of literature in my life that contains ethos or pathos would be the Bible. The Holy Bible has both a sense of emotion and clarity within the different books that make up the Bible. The Bible has balance and clarity which tells those who are believers how to believe and what to believe in, which shows the characteristics of ethos. Pathos can be found through emotion in the Bible based off all of the sacrifices Jesus made for all of the humans in order to create world we live in
