Summary of the Article:
Within the article Mapping Out Past and Future Minds: The Perceived Trajectory of Rationality Versus Emotionality Over Time, Ed O’Brien (2015) preforms three separate studies to understand exactly why it is we seem to perceive ourselves in two very different lights when it comes to thinking about the past and future. When looking to the past we often think of ourselves as very emotional with low rationality, while when looking to the future we see the opposite. It was found that people who acted more rationally tended to have a higher Emotional Intelligence (EI). Having a higher Emotional Intelligence helps people think things through better and keeps them from overreacting too quickly, as those with a lower EI are said to impulsive, which in turn can translate into being too emotional.
Analysis of the Interview and Emotional Intelligence:
While it is difficult to know how one sees their “past self” and “future self” from just one interview, it can be gathered that Ms. Innes may see her future self in a way that correlates with what the studies in Ed O’Brien’s article presents.

A Meta-Analytic Investigation of Mixed EI, Joseph, O’Boyle, Jin and Newman (March 2015) outline that there are two different types of Emotional Intelligence. One which focuses on the actual ability of the person or their visible intelligence and the other that encloses the said person’s personality traits and self-perceived abilities. These two types have come to be known as ability EI and mixed EI. It was found that the mixed EI side of a person seems to predict the said person’s job performance better than the ability aspect (Joseph, D., Jin, J., Newman, D., & O’Boyle, E., March
