Culture can be explained as connection built upon language and civilization, which language is practiced by civilization to give or exchange ideas of some kind. Finally, Tan used repetition throughout her essay to clearly reinforce her ideas as she repeats the phrase “broken English” and “fracture English” as well as “limited English” (Tan651). Tan uses these parallel phrases to clearly outline her ideas and create an effective connection among her readers. In the three articles “Do you Speak American” by Robert Macneil, “Why Good English is Good for You” by John Simon, and “Lost in America” by Douglas McGray they all share the same theme that Americans lack the motivation to be culturally diverse and broaden their horizons outside of the American Culture due to the lack of funds. This basically means that Americans lack the motivation to learn more about their culture and other cultures because they focus more on fitting in and doing the same thing as all other Americans. They lose the drive to be different and to educate themselves based on where they came from. Have you ever wondered what language is or meant to you? Language can mean many things such as where it comes from if you speak more than one language or it can also mean a voice of power. In this essay I'm going to be talking about how this plays a big part in our day to day life. In the article “Homemade Education” excerpt from the Autobiography of Malcolm X talks about who he is and what language meant to him. Also another article is “Martin Luther King Jr. biography” gives his perspective on the power of language and how it helped him become who he was as a leader.
Everyone speaks English differently some are fluent, while others have difficulties expressing their emotions when explaining their view or opinion on something. People communicate with each other differently depending on the situation, registers of language change, abbreviations and slang are often used to make the conversation match the situation. In relation, to being unable to perform a standard form of English, as displayed in Amy Tan’s Mother Tongue and Robyn Kina’s case both characters are not able to communicate and express their speak their ideas and feelings clearly, therefore respect from people within their community excludes Kina and Daisy is ignored.
If a student is able to communicate well enough in his or her non-Standard English for others to understand, why should educators be concerned about non-Standard English usage? Students need to understand Standard English because it will greatly affect their future ability. If a student is not taught to use and understand Standard English, they will be less successful in school and less likely to seek a higher education. Standard English is used in all public and private schools in the U.S., which would make learning more difficult if not impossible for students who do not understand it. Students who grow-up using non-Standard English are taken less seriously and perceived to less intelligent therefore they become less successful as adults.
In the writing, Jake Jamieson introduced and explained an argument about English using for immigrants. In first paragraph, the author introduced that the melting pot system is not working truly. Many people think the U.S. is famous for melting pot because of many immigrants. These people view the melting pot as a pot which contains many melted cultures and living styles inside. But he argues that these people lose their culture by adapting to new culture and only thing left is discrimination.
Language is an important factor in everyday life. For people who are not English-proficient, this statement is self-evident. When an individual does not understand the language of their environment it is often difficult to keep up with everyone else. People who cannot read, speak or understand the language of their peers face trouble because of their language barrier. Limited communication is a tolling setback in a world where everyday life is shaped by language, where words have an impact.
Separated into the categories primary, secondary dominant, and secondary non-dominant, discourses pertain to a person’s social identity, values, beliefs, acts, words, and attitudes according to the author, James Paul Gee, in the article, “Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction”. An individual who observes my life can effortlessly identify that my primary discourse is family. The way I act at every situation results from me observing my household members perform various activities. For instance, being in a family that relies particularly on the English language to succeed, I have easily become fluent in the linguistic. This knowledge grants me a sense of identity as the way I perceive concepts originates from my family.
Languages are complex because they are made up of many components. Some components include the culture, meaning, and interpretation. The way people understand language has to do mostly with their culture and their understanding of what is being said. Also, depending upon where someone is raised, the pronunciation of certain words can be different and therefore it influences the understanding. My goal in this paper is to demonstrate that language and culture are intertwined.
My observation four was conducted at the same location as my previous observations, at Jackson STEM Dual Language Magnet Academy in Pasadena California. I found it difficult to make objective observations since getting to know my students more. The question I took with me into this observation came from our class agenda the week of October 18th, the question that I based my observation was “ does treating all children fairly mean treating them the same?”. It was nice to see how the teacher took notes on each child during the day to report to parents at a later time concerning the progress their child has been making behaviorally and academically.

Many of English language researches have investigated the content within ELC. For instance, IELTS Official Test Centre is a strong reference in evaluating and promoting English language by running English schools in Asian countries such as China, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan and so on, since 1988.
