Animal Cruelty “ It is so much easier to avoid such rude interruptions to our work, our dreams, our hopes. It is, after all, awkward, troublesome, to be involved in another person's pain and despair”(Wiesel). This quote from Elie Wiesel’s “Perils of Indifference” perfectly sums up the dangers of indifference. This feeling can be seen throughout humanity as society reflects on various global crises with indifference and a lack of empathy. One of these global crises is animal cruelty, which is very dangerous to animals. Animal cruelty affects wildlife and can cause devastating effects on the food chain and food supply. According to the Bell-Rea Institute of animal technology, the dog in a dogfight “are given steroids and Other Drugs to help boost their muscle mass and also to help the aggression need it for fights” (“Dog Fighting Awareness”). This proves that dog fighting is a very violent and cruel act that harms the dogs fighting. The steroids given to these dogs are hazardous and combined with fighting as well can also cut a dog's lifespan in half. Bell-Rea Institute of animal technology also says that “during a dog fight, which can last up to 2 hours, onlookers make bets on which dog will win, bets can be upwards a couple of thousand dollars”(“Dogs Fighting Awareness”). This shows owners rather gamble on who wins the fight than care about the dog's health. After the fights are done, the mistreatment towards the animals never stops as they're kept in cages until the next fight happens. According to the article, The Hoarding Book: A Guide For Human Service Professionals, there are “thousands of cases of animal hoarding are reported yearly across the united states, with hundreds of thousands of animals involved(Bratotis et.al 111). This proves that animal hoarding is not something rare and is a serious issue that causes many animals to go without care. This is a widespread problem where not only the animals but also the owners are at risk. The article also states that a “ recent explanation of animal hoarding is that it is due to attachment to other people, and many who hoard animals are socially isolated(Bratotis et.al 113). This shows that being socially isolated from friends and family is the main reason that these animal hoarding habitats start. When done correctly being attached to an animal is fine, but when it starts to become an addiction is when problems start occurring. As the evidence suggests it is unnecessary to own too many animals, and this affects the killings of farm animals
