• Career Positions On December, 2015 I completed the Vascular Thoracic ICU GN internship training program at Florida Hospital Orlando, and passed from RN level I which is an advanced beginner nurse to RN level IV which is an experienced nurse. My place of employment follows Benner’s stages of clinical competence to promote their nurses. Nurses receive four types of levels depending their acquisition, development of skills and years of experience. To be promoted is important to me because it means that I am growing and learning as nurse each day and I am becoming more competent as time passes by.
The NICU is a Neonatal intensive care unit is a special area for premature and sick babies, they go there to receive the help they need, and some babies need help to breathe or they are missing something in their body. They can also come early before their due date and they are sent there to receive their special help. To be a neonatal nurse, you have to be a registered nurse in the (RN) with a four-year Bachelor of Science in a nursing degree is your (BSN). You must be certified in the NICU; you have to complete a minimum of year’s clinical experience in a hospital place. You also have to have licenses from the state giving you permission to do the things you learned.

I recently underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix in the hospital where I’m currently employed, receiving anesthesia from providers I had shadowed just a few weeks prior. Although I wouldn’t say I recommend the experience, being the patient gave me a new perspective, and it was eye-opening to have insight into both sides of the operating room and my entire hospitalization. Even though the anesthesia team knew my medical background, they were still comforting and professional in describing the anesthesia plan. Encountering the bedside manners of my healthcare team emphasized the importance of being calm and knowledgeable for patients and their families, regardless of health literacy level. Caring for others, often in high-stress situations, is what I enjoy about being an ICU nurse.
Not only is patient care complex, but industry-wide developments in healthcare are shifting more responsibility onto nurses than in the past. Anticipated shortages in physician staff and nursing faculty also place challenging intellectual demands on nursing leadership. Expectations for nurse leaders are rising, in this high-stakes environment, the Doctor of Nursing Practice program offers excellent preparation for advanced clinical practice. “This growing field of advanced practice nurses will face the changing landscape of healthcare and be required to create clinical strategies that improve practice and health outcomes” (Brown & Crabtree, 2013).

Furthermore, I have enjoyed my journey to this point in my career and am eager to take the next step. During my two years of experience in the ICU, I have developed strong critical thinking skills. I have cared for over 300 critically ill, ventilator-dependent patients. As part of my residency nursing program, I was part of an evidence-based project on IV pain medication and respiratory distress prevention.

My interest in anesthesia started when I had my very first surgery, a tonsillectomy, at five years old. The most intriguing part of that entire surgery was my encounter with the anesthesia provider. I vividly remember the anesthetist placing a mask over my face and asking me to breathe deeply, count to ten, and that I would start to get sleepy. After informing him that I was not sleepy, I complied anyway and began to count. The next thing I remember is waking up with a sore throat and trying to figure out how I slept through the entire surgery.
I am responsible for coordinating setting up modules for different complex nursing procedures for nurses reviews, informing nurses of upcoming educational conferences and posting articles pertaining to critical-care evidence based practice. I am proud to say that I have achieved all of my goals so far this year. I want to continue doing so to help create the best outcome of my future. I want to graduate from Troy University and major in Nursing. I plan to carry on my education into graduate school to provide better job opportunities.
