She sat still on the literal edge of her chair, barely breathing as Dan shuffled his papers and readied himself. She wondered for a moment if he would speak at all; the seconds dragged out like hours and she felt her heartbeat quicken. But then he caught her eye - both of them wide-eyed as does in headlights - and she felt a certain warmth overcome her. I 'm right here she tried to communicate to him, and he finally began to speak. She finally took a good breath; the first one in the last few days. He easily slipped into character, letting the words fall out of his mouth for her to hang on each one. Reality came speeding back as she felt the dull roar of idle conversation rise around her. This was just another lecture to all of these people, one they would probably forget in a week 's time. Some of the students had probably come to get a point or two of extra credit on their next exam. If only they knew how it feels from the other side. She stood awkwardly and filed out of the auditorium, unsure where to go or meet Dan. She stood by the doors, waiting for him, running her fingers through her hair and smoothing down her simple dark blue dress to give her hands something to do. A few minutes later, she felt a hand on her shoulder, and she spun around, ready to finally give Dan the kiss he deserved. But it was only John. "You 're good for him," John offered up, looking at her and letting the words hang in the air. It felt like an enormous compliment in the moment. It occurred to her that John might have been more than an advisor to Dan - perhaps they 'd been friends, of sorts. Dan didn 't talk about any female friends from school, and Charlie figured he 'd slept around. But she never thought about the colleagues he might leave behind if he left for LA. "He 's good for me," Charlie replied after a beat. Her cheeks were filling with color. Thankfully, Dan made an appearance a moment later. He looked a bit pale and clammy, but finally like himself again. She sighed as she melted into his arms, relieved to have him fully back again. "You did it," she smiled into his neck. "I knew you could. I told you, and I 'm never wrong," she said, leaning back and winking at him playfully.
