Personal Narrative: Calipatria

From a bird's eye view Calipatria is a small area completely dwarfed by the surrounding patchwork of fields. Among this green and yellow quilt are workers, scattered throughout each working their hands raw. Many from my birthplace, Mexicali, Mexico. I asked my mother one day why she left Mexico. She said to people over there going to the United States was like winning the lottery. In America, everyone was supposed to be rich and happy. Leaving your motherland, your family, your life behind was worth it because the grass was greener on the other side of the border. My parents left believing this dream.
