Over the course of that semester we struggled with some of the more challenging concepts
Through it all I never gave up and I worked hard to get the grade I got and it taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to , and that One of the most difficult parts of life is deciding whether to walk away or try
Throughout middle school and my first 2 years in high school, I’ve gotten mainly As in my classes with an occasional B here and there. So in my junior year of high school, when I heard that I can take more than 1 AP course, I immediately wanted to challenge myself. I registered for 4 AP courses along with orchestra, and spanish on top of my extracurriculars. “Are you trying to kill yourself?” is what all my friends asked when I told them about my plan.
This challenge was both exciting and rewarding. The class progressed quickly, it started moving at an extremely fast rate, and seemed to be getting only faster. When the first test came I
This years most challenging courses were AP Chemistry and Math Analysis. Science and math are the toughest subjects for me and I planned to challenge myself this junior year. I was able to get my grades up for AP Chemistry by retaking tests and completing extra credit because my test grades were low even though I pushed myself to study nightly. My strengths would include that I never throw in the towel and I push myself every day, every night, in every way to understand what I am learning and achieve what I am striving for.
Over the summer, I would like to take both geometry and Algebra II so I can take honors precalculus sophomore year. If I cannot take both of these courses over the summer I cannot take honors precalculus sophomore year and Calculus BC junior year. Taking both geometry and algebra II over the summer will help me in taking other rigorous math courses, as stated before, and other courses in other fields. I am interested in pursuing fields that are highly dependent on advanced math courses and skills.
Despite the challenge, I managed to earn decent grades that I was still proud of. Unfortunately, to
Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement? Just like most new international students, the hardest challenge I faced in USA was coping in a completely different society. Moving to the United States is not all about changing lifestyle, but also facing cultural differences. It was difficult to adapt to the new education system and making friends because of the language barriers.
A challenge that I over came was tossing a flag in the Color Guard. I had to learn how to toss my flag from my teacher Mrs. Tomas. She had to teach me how to toss it high enough, so I can prepare to catch it. She had taught me how to toss it right so I can catch it and not hit anyone, and I had to practice a lot, so I can learn the moves, and do them right. It was hard, but I caught on very fast.
She was really struggling with her teacher because she said that he was going way to fast for her and that everything he said just flew over her head. After helping her out she finished with a B in that class. Another unforgettable one was a girl that is one of my closest friends at school and her name is Macy. She has major anxiety problems and when she gets something wrong in class she feels like the teacher is making her feel like an idiot.
That has been my weakness coming into this class, but through practice and repetition, it has transformed my writings into being great pieces. I would also recommend, working on your public speaking skills as this class bread and butter is discussions, the part I like most. I would definitely tell you not to be afraid to speak during the classroom discussions. The assignment I would say challenged me the most is an essay we had to do on Pat Buchanan’s short essay “Deconstructing America”. The assignment was to deconstruct his essay ‘no pun intended’ and figure out whether it was effective or not and why.
To this day it shocks me that the College Board could make us sing for a grade. Not play an instrument, but read notes off of a paper, into a tape recorder, alone in a room with only a proctor and a microphone. While the scope and goal of the class still slightly evades me to this day, the anger I felt towards AP Music Theory has long since evolved into something different, acceptance. I had been convinced by my peers that having played the piano for seven years was enough to ace the class. In their defense it did give me a good place to start.
Learning about grit and what a growth mindset is allowed me to realized that grit and a growth mindset work together to support success. Grit is the motivation one possess that will determine whether they win or lose. The grittier a person is the more they learn, get experience and discover their potentials. All of these things define what a growth mindset is. In other words, a growth mindset is discovering your unknown potentials.
My misfortune in math later helped me realize that I needed to change my outlook on school. Instead of dismissing a subject just because I was not good at it, I would rather try and identify what I was doing wrong, and work to fix it. Taking the the ACT engage test helped me realize what my academic strengths and weaknesses are, and how I can use this knowledge to capitalize these strengths so I can be more successful in college than I was in highschool.
In seventh grade there are many challenges like lockers, not understanding lessons, and class time. Lockers can be a problem because they can get jammed or you might forget your locker combination. Not understanding a lesson can also be a challenge because you can fail a test/quiz and you can fall behind. Time can also be a problem because you only have about 45 minutes of class. If your doing an assignment or an essay that is due at the end of class, you will have to use your time wisely in order to finish on time.
