Within the community, they find strength, shaping their identities,
Community in the dictionary means a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. Everyone belongs to a community or considers themselves a part of one, however communities tends to take away individualism. Anna Quindlen, author of “Commencement Speech at Mount Holyoke College”, spoke to the graduating class and delivered a speech on the effects of society on individuals. The purpose of this was to lead and guide the graduates into a happier life. Being true to self can only bring happiness, conforming to mold never designed to fit will only cause discomfort and unhappiness.
Rebels Without a Cause Not very many people have affected me in the same way as my friend Jake Fernholz. I have never realized the influence he has had on me until someone pointed out that we talk and think the same way. I only met Jake two years ago in track, when a pulled hamstring injury caused Mr. Kellerman to have me practice with the long distance kids. Mr. Kellerman forced me into staying on the long distance team and that is where I started to hit it off with Jake. It took me a long time to be comfortable with Jake, but when I did we quickly found our common interests.
Most people make the assumption that a community is made up of people who live near them when really it could be made up of people from all over the world. The word “community” can mean many things to different people and everyone has their own opinion on what it means to them. To me community means a group of people who all share the same interest, likes, and who are willing to come together and help one another in times of need. That is why I strongly believe that even if you are on the opposite sides of the world from one another you could still come together and be apart of a strong healthy community. To create your own community with others even if it is through the internet is very simple and you really just have to be willing to accept
Upstage is back, downstage is front, right is left, left is right, out is up, break a leg but don't really, wings have nothing to do with birds, the catwalk doesn’t involve cats, and when the stage manager says move it means move. The theatre vocabulary is very confusing for the outside world, but for me it is my second language. More specifically, I have developed a passion for the technical elements of theatre over the years. The joy of being the “people in black” that can make amazing sets and produce incredible plays which goes unnoticed.. Although this discourse is much small yet complex it has helped me find out who I am but also in my academic skills through learning how to work in teams, solve problems independently but also how to be
Society is fooled into believing in the applied connection among people. Benedict Anderson’s idea of imagined communities emphasizes that, “… the members of even the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion” (5). Members of neighborhoods, cities, states, or countries feel a sense of unity with other members for living in the same place or maybe having the same basic values, but true unity comes from understanding the similarities among each other, considering the impact a person can have on another, and caring about lives. Recognizing the importance of lives being socially intertwined is necessary to sustain a considerate society.
Community has never been an unknown concept to me. While the concept is complex, I’ve always found it relatively simple to find a sense of community, no matter where I am. I feel a sense of community when I am involved and when I am connected to the people in my immediate surroundings. Growing up in this generation has given me first-hand experience of the corresponding dimensions of community, and learning that our community isn’t known on one level. It’s viral.
Once the grey stormy clouds started rolling on the horizon, something was coming. The smell of smoke was in the air and the grounds started shaking. That’s when everyone started running. It was another bomb attack where all the buildings were falling and people were fleeing. With all the chaos of people trying to run with their families, leaving everything behind to get to a safe place I had to stop.
After days of searching for refuge, through the tangle of eroding, weather-beaten and fragmented hills, two score soldiers manned a military outpost where the borders of Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan meet, was placed right before our eyes and it was like the sorrows which previously filled our bodies during our walk to this place, not knowing we would actually find any refuge, had almost fled from our minds, in hope that we would be accepted into this place ahead of us. As we drew nearer and nearer to the refuge, the wind picked up, our energy slowed down, his lips cracked and bled and the sparse energy left in me completely drained out of me and I collapsed onto the ground. Moments later, my head was being cradled in the crook of his arm and I felt the drops of water trickling down my face and onto my eyes, clearing the sand and dust which allowed me to slightly flicker my eyes open to see so many unfamiliar faces staring down at me and the only familiar face, my lover, reached his hands to mine and gently pulled me into his arms, guiding me to a hut which we have been allowed in for as
I was going through boxes looking for something, anything that would help me finish this project. My teacher just handed out an essay that we have to do on the history of a family member . My Dad told me if we have anything it would be in the trunk upstairs, but there were only trinkets in the trunk. I resorted to scavenging through the boxes in the attic. I gave up after finding nothing except a picture of some man sitting on a pony.

Organic communities are very intimate and personal communities where a typical individual knows a large portion of the population. Sport brings the community together typically behind a common cause, therefore uniting individuals. Rituals such as pep rallies in high school and college as well as homecoming dances help encourage a sense of community through focusing on commonalities of sport in communities. On the one hand, a major positive of sport based organic communities is that they inspire a community to set aside differences and work together. On the other hand, sport based-organic communities mask and reproduce the different hierarchies that exist in these societies such as gender, sexuality, and race.
As a person goes through life he or she may wonder “Who am I?” and “What is my purpose?” The objective of this paper is to allow me to reflect and critically analyze who I am as a person. In this paper, I will discuss my social location and identity, my life experiences and my privileges and disadvantages.
The world is filled with people, and like snowflakes, each person is not the same as another. Each person identifies with different aspects of their lives to create their own personal identities. I personally identify with my Italian side of my family to help form who I am today. I have found myself connecting with this side more so than the other parts of my identity. It affects how I live my life by becoming the center to the culture surrounding me.
A community, a complex term that often times elicits various feelings and definitions, generally implies that there are relationships between a group of people that share some common goals, values, the same geographical location, or, perhaps a way of life that reinforces one another. In a community, members choose to associate with, or connect to each other. However, it is only when we take a step back from the activities in our life’s, do we recognize reality and witness the social interactions that occur around us every day. The overarching purpose of this assignment was to go out into the community on two separate occasions to observe the social interactions- paying close attention to evidence of social networks, excluded or exclusive communities,
