My Vision of a Nurse Leader
Nursing is often described as an art or science. It is actually both: (Chernicharo, Dasilva, & Ferreira, 2011). As a scientific art, nursing is a challenging and diverse profession that offers many opportunities. It embraces people with varied interests, strengths and passion. Leadership in nursing is a very crucial aspect. An effective leadership is critical to modern nursing’s potential to make a difference in health care and reform (Nilufa, 2015). An effective nurse leader should have a greater vision. Having a vision will help nurse leader and their team to become inspired and committed to a shared goal (Martin, McCormack, Fitzsimons, & Spirig, 2014). In the ever-changing health care system and with the advance in science and technology, the future health care system needs a transformational leader, who is vulnerable to change. A successful leader in any organization must exhibit strong leadership attributes.
Communication is perhaps the most important attribute and one of the greatest challenge facing nurse leaders and managers. The nurse leader must possess high level of integrity through trusting relation that motivate and inspire the members in the team (Mullally et al., 2013). It is a concept of consistency in action, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcomes. A leader should never compromise their integrity in any circumstances. Integrity connotes a deep commitment to do the right thing for the right reason, regardless of circumstances. A leader with integrity always seek best for others, ignoring self, practice good stewardship and will never forget their followers, hence the leader who possess the quality of integrity can be called as a whole or complete
