As a Chicana first generation college student my parents have reiterated to me that education was the only way to a better life. They came to achieve the American dream, but failed in their efforts, now they hope to see their children achieve it. Since I was little I knew that I wanted to help out people when I grew up. I was conflicted on what I wanted to study when I was in high school so I opted to go to a community college and find out what interested me. I fell in love with the sociology courses I took and received an A.A in sociology. I transferred to UC Santa Barbara to pursue my Bachelors in Sociology. I want to acquire a masters in social work or educational counseling. With a masters in social work/ counseling I hope to work with kids and low income families. Coming from an impoverished neighborhood, I want to help the kids growing up in the similar situations and give them a chance to pursue higher education. My interest in these career choices can be associated with various theories such as social cognitive theory which is based on our beliefs that relate to family experiences, sociological influences, abilities, and aptitude (Lent, Brown, 2016). The career construction theory explains how personality traits, the development of self-concept and the influences of the social context one inhabits has an influence on career choices (Savicka 2012). Chope (2010) speaks about how parents have a deep influence on their children’s lives. The parent’s guidance is a strong component in the decision making process this can be seen on how they Expose their children to a particular variety of career choices. Parental guidance is something the test does not look at. I can affirm that my parent’s guidance has influenced me on what career I want to take. Where I come from and my family values are an essential part of why I want to be a social worker/counselor. Even though this test believes I would be content working in jobs such as administration and customer service I do not think I will be. According to Super’s life span approach a career is ongoing, continuous and lifelong (Lecture, Oct 05). I may change my career choices later on in life and maybe then I will take into consideration the option that the SII gave me, but at this moment I am set on what I want for my future
