Personal Statement

Engineering combines my two passions: Physics and Design. These passions stem from a deep
fascination in understanding the mechanisms and aesthetics behind both everyday and complex
objects. Engineering comprises a series of processes, from sprouting an idea, to the
visualisation of a design plan and finally creating a product. It is the interplay between
each aspect of this formula that inspires me to pursue a career in engineering.

Having visited exhibitions, I have been gripped by the arrival of new technologies and the
roles they play within engineering. Attending the 'Robots' exhibition at the Science Museum

To me, robotics poses a fresh engineering challenge as it requires synergy
between both the mechanical and design aspects of engineering. The possibility of being
involved in an evolving field and furthering the bounds of technology are key motivators in
pursuing this career.
Being recognised as an innovative member of my technology class, I was nominated to enter the
Arkwright Scholarship Scheme. The scheme examined my ability to present solutions to real-life
problems including designing an automated recycling system. I was able to utilise my knowledge
of pulleys and tension forces to design a conveyor belt system that differentiates items based
on texture and weight. In progressing, I was interviewed at Brunel university where my lateral
and creative thinking was challenged to generate new design concepts for common structures,
including a beam bridge. The brief involved the aesthetic and mechanical improvement of the
bridge. I was commended for having the most innovative design and for my ability to express my
passion for engineering to market leaders; this has only further solidified my desire to study

Equally my experience at the architectural firm, Llewelyn Davies, taught me a
lot about how architects play two distinct roles - the designer and the human. Knowledge of
physics was essential for the design, but what took the greatest skill was the ability to
communicate with the client, leading to a tailored design that worked for them both.
Beyond academia, I have taken on the roles of technology prefect and Marketing Director for my
Young Enterprise (YE) team. One of my responsibilities as prefect has been to coordinate
technology club sessions, in which we have been designing and building our own small-scale
remote-controlled cars. The project has proved to be a complex challenge, and through making
use of CAD software, it has allowed me to develop my practical design skills. As Marketing
Director of my YE team I was involved in delegating tasks between team members and being
responsible for the creation of the company website. In this pursuit my role was to ensure the
optimum aesthetic and design of branding - targeted to our market. Teamwork and leadership are
two valuable skills that I have learned from these roles which are essential to
