Understanding the human body, its structure, function and the vast array of health conditions and diseases that can now be identified, has been a fascination of mine for a long time. This is when I knew an undergraduate course in Anatomy and Human Biology would be perfect for me. I want to understand how advanced an organism can be and one day convert this knowledge into medical practise, thereby helping improve the health of today’s society. The skills I have already gained, I want to develop and form a strong platform to train as a physiotherapist where I will be able to assess patients, diagnose conditions and provide effective treatment, whilst monitoring their progress to ensure maximum mobility is attained. I was taught basic first aid skills, role play sessions involving dealing with different patients, along with ethics courses highlighting difficult decisions medical professions have to make. Throughout my time at the hospital it was clear to see the importance of making your own judgement’s when determining the nature and severity of a patient’s condition whilst also calling upon the whole team to make an overall decision to provide the best possible diagnosis and treatment required to affect a full recovery. Another rewarding placement was volunteering at a local care home with a dementia unit. Here I provided additional help to the staff who needed to complete other daily tasks whilst I planned little activities that could keep everyone busy before it was meal time. I got to meet such an amazing woman named Betty who despite having problems with her replacement hip joint, still wanted to partake in the weekly ballroom sessions, as it reminded her of her youth. As part of my Gold award I did a residential week in the Lake District where I worked in a group with individuals from around the UK and we helped out in the local community clearing footpaths. This allowed me to develop communication and interpersonal skills. Working as part of a team was very rewarding and beneficial, and I know that physiotherapists need to communicate with all those in the health care team of the NHS to ensure the patient has the best possible care and attention. I also dance, which has been a regular part of my life for 16 years now, and is a good release from the stress of the work requirements of University.
