Nurses play a vital role in the healthcare system as a patient advocate. Many times patients have never been in a hospital setting and it can be overwhelming, they do not know what to ask for or how to ask for it. Besides the nursing assistant, nurses spend the most time with a patient and therefore they are more acutely aware of the patient’s needs. Nurses act as a liaison between the patient, family, and the rest of the healthcare team.

When we are little we all have aspirations of what we want to be when we grow up. I wish I could sit here and tell you I knew I wanted to be a nurse from kindergarten or even high school, but the truth is I had no clue that I wanted to be a nurse until a few years ago when I visited a pediatric oncology floor. It was on the pediatric oncology floor that I got to see nursing in a whole new light. I had expected the patients on the floor to be sad and dreary. Nurses must have all of these skills in order to survive in the healthcare field. Nurses display organization by prioritizing their patient needs and organizing their daily routine. If a nurse is not organized they will become behind on medication passes and possibly miss a critical nursing intervention. Nurses display critical thinking everyday while assessing patients. A nurse needs to be able to connect patient symptoms, health history, and assessment data to be able to fully understand what is going on with a patient. Most importantly, nurses must be calm during stressful events, if a nurse freaks out during a medical emergency it could mean the difference between life and
