Personal Statement: A Career In Nursing

When I was twelve years old, I relied on my Magic 8 Ball to help me try out for the junior high cheerleading squad. The Magic 8 Ball is a toy that you ask a question, give it a little shake, and it provides you with an answer. In my case, my Magic 8 Ball’s response on whether or not I would make the squad was “It is decidedly so”. Unfortunately, I did not make the squad that year. In retrospect, the outcome was obvious. I did not know the routine therefore I went into the tryouts completely unprepared. The lesson I learned was that without possessing vital information, you cannot be successful in an endeavor. Every year DECA holds competitve events and last year I competed in the Business Research category. My research project was to develop a social, local, and mobile (SoLoMo) strategy for a business or organization. Naturally, I wanted to focus on my current employer, ARHS. To address the high turnover for nursing staff, I developed a business plan and mobile application that would retain and recruit more registered nurses. The mobile application was created after spending many months researching data and creating spreadsheets to address the reasons for our high turnover. After placing first in the state competition, I then traveled to Anaheim, California where I competed at the International Career Development Conference. While completing my undergraduate degree at MSU I was able to surround myself with educators and students who helped improve my critical thinking skills and strengthen my leadership abilities. I believe that MSU-Meridian’s new Professional Master of Business Administration program will continue to provide me the most focus-forward education with its specialized coursework. For example, the Quantitative Analysis and Business Research course will likely increase my knowledge of statistical techniques and data-driven business decisions. Not only do I want to hone my analytical skills, I want to be an innovative leader in the healthcare industry and I'm positive that the Leadership Skills course will help achieve
