Similar to other immigrants my family history is somewhat compelling. Starting with my grandfather who was exiled out of Egypt in 1959 primarily as a result of the "decolonization process and the rise of Egyptian nationalism”, my immediate family and I also left France in 2004 as a result of rising tension against Jews. The migration of my grandparents and parents, from a young age, cultivated a sense of determination in me to overcome obstacles. Arriving in Miami at age 5, I had to learned my third language, English, in order to attend school. I was determined to and successfully lost my accent and got tested into the gifted program after a year of school.
However, I had always told myself that I would someday re enroll, earn a degree, and graduate so that I could be a prime example for my four children as to what never giving up looks like. I believe this college would enable me to earn a degree without taking on a heavy financial burden. In addition, I appreciate the flexible structure of programs which would fit into my current lifestyle as a busy mom. And, I definitely love the maturer yet diverse environment the school has to offer.
Dear Rossier School of Education Faculty, Throughout my education I was not expected to succeed, english being my second language and attending low socioeconomic schools in the city of Santa Ana I was deemed to dropout of school like the majority of children before me. I rarely remember having a student-teacher relationship with an educator throughout my education, and as I succeeded academically my teachers were surprised but nothing more than surprised. Then there were the teachers that made all the difference, teachers that went above and beyond and left an everlasting impact on how I view education, and essentially what made achieving a higher education possible. With the guidance of teachers, instructors and school faculty I was admitted to the University of California Irvine which was not only an accomplishment and a dream of mine but an accomplishment for my family. My journey through education is still the reality of many children attending low socioeconomic schools and/or public schools today, Just like the amazing mentors I had throughout my education, I want to make a difference alongside of them by creating positive and supporting
I plan on obtaining my masters in nursing and becoming a neonatal nurse. Without taking science courses at River Valley, becoming a nurse would have never crossed my mind. As a sophomore I took biology where I learned about topics such as genetics and how different genes can affect an offspring. In chemistry I became fascinated with the idea of mixing different elements and chemicals to make something brand new and in anatomy I was taught about the skeletal, muscle and nervous systems which we were able to better see through
I currently am a junior Nursing major and Psychology minor at the illustrious Winston Salem State University. My choice to attend a HBCU has been one of the best decisions I have ever made in my twenty one years of life. It brings my heart so much pleasure in all thing that I do at my HBCU. I have chosen to apply to Covenant College because I seek a deeper relationship with the Lord that transcends into every area of my life, and I believe that I can facilitate that growth with the Christ-centered curriculum and community Covenant has to offer. I see the importance of being a witness to Christ at a secular university, but during my college education I want to better equip myself to proclaiming Christ in my profession and day-to-day living. Throughout the next formative years of my life, it is important to me to surround myself with young people who serve the Lord. Encouraged by conversations with my admissions counselor and information on the website, I believe I will easily mesh into the dynamic that exists at Covenant and cultivate lasting relationships. In addition, I tremendously value access to nature.
I would like to become an active member of Carrboro High School’s National Honor Society in order to benefit my community through service. I am immensely committed to serving and improving my community, as I have made distinctly clear with my 143 service hours. Through these service hours, I have focused on the improvement of the future community by helping disenfranchised refugee children coming from horrible living conditions in Western Africa, by teaching children about biology, chemistry, and scientific history, by preparing freshmen for their high school careers, by raising money to protect and aid voiceless animals hurt in car crashes and other human infringements, and by creating rain gardens, planting food crops, and decreasing Carrboro High School’s environmental
I have worked so hard in school waiting for a moment like this. UNCW would be a great challenge for me, but it would also help me out immensely. UNCW has a excellent education program and that is exactly the field of study I aim to go into. I spent approximately half of my sophomore year at the early college tutoring at Dobson Elementary. I cherished every second helping my fifth grade class.
The AVID program has had a positive impact in my academics, and in my life by helping me focus, enrich, and solidify my goals. I can say with full confidence that AVID has become an integral part of my High School year that equipped me with the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in college. As an immigrant who came to the United States five years ago and English being my third language, the AVID program challenged me to think critically and strive to learn more. Personality wise, there are major changes that I observed once I joined the program.
I am interested in furthering my education because of my deep fascination in biology and how it affects our future. Ever since the first science class I took in 7th grade I knew that the topic would be incorporated in my post-secondary education in some fashion. Having the ability to understand the inner workings of nature and the relationships between molecules, organisms, and the environment have always interested me. I am a senior who is at the top of my class in AP Biology as of now, and the dream of being involved with the subject is beginning to come true. Owning one of the highest rates of teen pregnancies in the Union, Texas has an abstinence only approach in sexual education to try to reduce pregnancies? In addition to this, Texas ranks first as being the top spender in sexual education, but can’t get solidified results out of its spending. Texas doesn’t teach anything about contraception, how the Texas Department of State Health Services has said that the mission of the program is to delay sexual actions among teenagers until they are old enough, and the use of abstinence only education to protect children from explicit content only to find out in their own way leads to curiosity
Not everyone has the privilege of becoming a Macalester student. The ones that do receive an amazing liberal arts education. I dreamed of attending a none community college school. Thanks to my learning disabilities it was never a possibility. Instead I thrived during my lone year at community college.
Reflecting on my personal and educational goals I believe UNCW, Wilmington will not only allow me to grow as a student or person, but will create new challenges in my life that will lead to fulfilling my goal of becoming a successful woman someday. Growing up in a small town off the Coast of Maine, I have grown up learning to do things on my own and that things in life aren 't handed to you. Since I was able to work I have been; racking blueberries, hauling lobster traps, digging for clams, working in diners, and much more. I have learned to be independent and to not have to rely on others. The one thing in life I have always wanted is to be able make something of myself and to build a successful future and not have to stress or struggle.
How has your involvement in the AVID program contributed to your success and/or growth at Fremont High School? Being an AVID tutor at Fremont High school has been enriched my life in multiple ways and I will carry the connections I gained being an AVID tutor beyond my high school career. During tutorial, AVID helped me improve my teaching skills by forcing me to critically think and problem solve. Tutorial time pushed me to try to try to teach and make sure those I was helping understood the problems and why and how they solve them a certain way instead of just showing them how to solve the problem. I did this by empathizing with tutees, recognizing I was once in their shoes and figuring out to how to help them by thinking of what would have
