I was given a gift at age 4 that would set me up for the rest of my life. Now, this was not something tangible, but advice that helped nurture the seed that was already within me. My parents gave me the gift of self-motivation, which helped me then, helps me now, and will help me in the future. It all began when my parents told me that if I was going to strive towards anything then it should be to make myself proud. And so the self-motivation seed began sprouting, but I did not know it then. The first instance of this was when I started being graded on my work. Along with the stars, good job’s, and well done’s being written on my papers came a sense of accomplishment. Being validated for my hard work and effort served as reminders that I was on the right path. I constantly wanted to learn as much as I could about anything and everything. School became my environment as my desire to excel grew. Developing my learning style and pushing myself to always do my 110%, I took responsibility for my studies. However, this did not mean acing every assignment instead my goal was for my grade to accurately reflect my effort. Though circumstances are much different from when I was younger, such as my workload, responsibilities, hobbies, social life, and especially my classes, one aspect that has not changed is the attitude I have towards it all. Since I learned to do my best for me, I was striving for good grades because I wanted to and it was important to me, not because my parents wanted me to or anyone else.
