George Bernard Shaw once asserted, “He who can, does; he who cannot, teaches.” I have heard this quote uttered by numerous people throughout my life, but I never accepted it as true. If anything, I believe the opposite is applicable. A teacher not only has to be able; he or she must understand and have the ability to demonstrate that understanding. In any other profession, a person’s salary increase or value is evaluated solely by his or performance; however, a teacher’s success is gauged by the achievement of his or her many students. Therefore, in my opinion, a teacher has one of the most difficult and important jobs available. Walking into her classroom every day generated a tremendous amount of anger for me, for I despised the fact that she could treat her students so horribly and still have a job. She regularly humiliated students when they did not understand a concept, implemented ridiculous punishments, and so much more. In one instance, she insisted I call myself an expletive as penance for something I did not even do. In the past, I had always loved attending school because I adored learning and improving upon skills; however, this teacher made me loathe every day of that year, which in turn affected my academic prosperity. Although my experience in her classroom was horrific, it was a chief component in my decision to teach. I want to correct the mistakes she made as a teacher by becoming a teacher myself. I want to teach because I want to ensure that kids, at least the ones that enter my classroom, are encouraged, not humiliated, are inspired, not disheartened, and feel safe, not antagonized. As much as I hold this teacher accountable for a terrible learning experience, she is also culpable for a valuable one. I observed many factors of her teaching style that I did not approve of, and these are what motivated me later in life to choose this profession and to start off knowing exactly what I do not want to remodel. My time with Mrs. Sage and my fourth grade teacher affected me in remarkably unalike ways, but they both had a monumental impact on my resolve to become a
