The most powerful memory that I have is that of my sister being taken away in an ambulance in the middle of the night. I was 6 years old too young to understand what was going on; or why it was happening, I felt helpless and I wanted to stop it. That is the moment that I wanted to become.
My sister has ulcerative colitis, resulting in her spending large periods of time in hospital; therefore I would accompany her frequently. This provided me with a realistic view of life as a doctor: the strenuous, long hours, the stress of juggling patient care whilst being on the point of exhaustion. I have also organised a volunteer placement at a pharmacy: gaining a deeper understanding of the NHS system, the process of what exactly happens the moment a patient leaves a GP surgery and how vital each area of the organization is. For example, the pharmacist has to double check the prescription the GP orders, which is then checked again by an additional pharmacist: all to ensure that the patient gets the safest and most efficient treatment possible. My responsibilities involved selecting the correct drug according to the prescription, helping to managing the stock and identifying what medication is unsuitable for use. My team contributed to the community by renovating a local parish centre, which involved a degree of trust to enable effective teamwork. As the lead treasurer, I was in charge of raising and managing the funds for the renovation. This position enabling my time management skills, since I had to reach a certain quota whilst aiding other members of the team to attain the equipment necessary.
