Like any other 400 metre runner, I know it takes perseverance, hard work, determination and compassionate zeal to finish up the last 100 metres of that undoubtedly tiresome race, but once you cross the finish line in first place with a medal around your neck along with the crowd cheering you on, the feeling is ecstatic just like the strenuous yet rewarding career I am ready to partake in medicine.
My decision to study medicine sprung up from my love for the sciences as a child in primary school, where I participated in many quizzes and science exhibitions. Learning about the complex systems in the body that work collectively to perform functions and also the many chemical reactions simultaneously taking place within an organism, brought me great insight into how detailed the sciences really are. This experience brought me confidence in my decision to be a doctor as it gave me a realistic view on the different aspects of medicine which are vital to the provision effective healthcare. My encounter with Dr. Richard Marfuggi enlightened me about the challenges associated with being a doctor as it requires not just the deliverance of healthcare but also the ability to be compassionate and empathetic in order to connect with patients of all social groups. By shadowing a general physician who was also the medical superintendent of a district hospital, I was able to experience what Dr. Marfuggi had said as doctors treated their patients in a holistic view, worked collectively as a team and dedicated long hours of their personal lives in order to care for
