Doctor of Social Work Program Application Personal Statement Ashley Newberry LCSW, LISW As I child, I was introduced to the human service field in a unique way. For as long as I can remember, my mother has had a human service profession and provided me with daily examples of how to help others. One of my earliest memories is riding out a hurricane while we stayed in the adult group home where my mother worked, assisting with safety measures for residents and providing comfort to her community. My mother worked in multiple residential programs throughout my life, specializing her work with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
Living with any form of mental illness is never an easy task for one person to deal with alone. My main reason for applying to this course is to attain the knowledge, skill set, and credentials to be able to start and maintain a fulfilling career as mental health professional, specifically a school counselor. My primary interest in counseling started with my own journey as a teenager with depression and finding out that many of my friends at the time were also suffering from stress and overwhelming mental health conditions that we did not fully understand at the time. This experience was the catalyst that encouraged me to pursue a career in the mental health field so that I could better understand the emotional and psychological conflict that
To be a trailblazer in my family means more to me than to some others. My family came from Cameroon, Africa as a family of seven. The first apartment we were able to live in was a two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment. One bedroom was for my parents and the second was shared between all five kids. Two boys on the top bunk and three girls on the bottom bunk.
Many perceived those with depression as emotionally weak and unstable, though I see our heighten sensitivity to pain drives the desire to alleviate others’ suffering. I’ve struggled with major depression since childhood. The overwhelming feeling of hopelessness can be debilitating. I remember every unhappy memory and they play like a film in my head regularly. But I also became an expert in coping and guiding myself out of rock bottom.
Apart from countless extracurricular I partake in within my high school community, I have also volunteered at the Toronto Durgabari (Hindu temple), Woodhall Park Care Community, worked at Yogen Fruz, as well as currently working at McDonalds. Upon my participation in organizing and planning events at my temple I was able to learn to cooperate in a large group of people in which my leadership skill were enhanced among others. After my volunteer work among my religious community, I was molded into an active citizen and built virtues including integrity, gratitude, humility, etc. In addition, after receiving my first job and being apart of a team that works together to achieve a common corporate goal not only implemented a sense of discipline
During my community health internship, I hope to grow personally and academically and be able to take the skills learned in class and apply them for future public health practice. Currently, I am interested in internships where I will have exposure to government policies, advocacy, and field research work. These are some categories of work where I have not had much exposure in and I would like to learn more about. In addition, I enjoy to work in a fast paced work environment that requires me to be a critical thinker and have direct hands-on experience. The specific work environments I am interested in are the federal workforce, research labs and public health consulting groups.
Health and social care is something that I have always been passionate about. Because I have studied health and social care for the last four years I have regularly met a lot of the most vulnerable members of society through past work experiences. Through past placements I have worked with children who have special needs. This helped me develop ways of communicating with the children this could be through sign language. Because my Aunt is deaf I have taught myself basic sign language in order to communicate with her effectively.
Since I was young, I was starved to learn more about psychology. Part of it was from growing up in an abusive household. I wanted to understand why my family acted so irrationally. Another part of it was the mental health issues I and those around me struggled with. I wanted to prove such diseases really existed and how terrible they were.
When I was younger, I didn’t spend time thinking about my future. I didnt have any worries. I excelled at my school work. My future was something that I thought I wouldn’t have to worry about. I thought because I was intelligent, I would succeed.
Ever since I was in middle school, psychology has been the field I wanted to follow. Even as a child I was intrigued by human behavior, though I didn’t think about it in those words. As I grew up, the questions became more specific and I became interested in understanding how certain cognitive processes work and what their biological bases are, especially when it comes to learning problem-solving skills and acquiring new knowledge. As a college student I instantly fell in love with psychology, and I decided I wanted to work with children and adolescents. Figuring out what to do after college, however, took a little more time and contemplation.
