As an active student at UWM studying Health Sciences I want to be able to fulfill this mission statement through the conducting of an undergraduate research project. My proposed project will focus on the health of students at UWM by surveying selected individuals about Mental Health issues. I want to draw conclusions from this project in order to educate college level students about this growing issue and how important it is for one not to, to continuing to suffer in silence and how to seek help. I also want to bring light to the benefits of seeking help, and to improve the overall health of college students.
Brief statement of the problem Hispanic and Latino populations are not being provided with adequate mental health care and are an underserved population (Peters, Sawyer, & Guzman, 2014). There are several barriers, cultural and other, that prevent and dissuade Hispanic and Latino individuals from seeking mental health care (The Pew Charitable Trusts, 2015). Lack of bi-lingual providers is one of the many obstacles this population is faced with. Details of the problem A large minority population: • According to the U.S. 2010 Census, 16% of the total population was of Hispanic or Latino decent.
Said risks include poverty, cultural (not culturally acceptable to talk about feelings) and even lack of positive role models within a group. The goal of SBMHPPs are to offer students in the urban community a continuous follow up among the students they are trying to reach. Along with policies in school, these programs reinforce those policies to better the Latin community that struggles with mental health issues. This article focuses directly on ethnic minority communities in the state of New York. The participants, starting out at 184 students later dropping to 174, were from two schools that provides a mental health program within their school.
This causes a significant amount of negative stress that can lead to an increased risk of poverty, and difficulties integrating with the community, along with a lack of support groups. I plan to use this information to support my statements surrounding stress and stigmatization. Mental health issues are often misconceived and it is often believed there is no treatment. The Canadian Mental Health Crisis And The Organizations At Work Canada is a country with many health benefits, but it is also a country that spends only 6 percent on mental health and has the third highest suicide rate in the industrialized world (Youth Metal Health Canada). This reflection will dive into what mental health is and what two stakeholders are doing about it. According to the Oxford Languages mental health can be defined as “A person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being” (Oxford languages). Using this information we can understand one’s psychological well being is essential in regards to their current state and has implementations on their physical health.
And if all the previous hiccups were not of enough influence, adding shame and social unacceptance may just entirely put depression treatment at a halt. IV. Mental illnesses can be belittled or simply overlooked in most societies but when additional factors such as the ones mentioned above are present, the effects are culturally significant. To bridge the gap, the underlying mental illnesses that are not addressed cause more significant damage to others which results in more mental illnesses. The access to care and treatment is limited to Natives which is what I want to change. Currently, most Native Americans cannot seek adequate treatment due to economic barriers, they cannot pay for doctors or subsequent pills. Additionally, access to mental health services can be limited due to location, health insurance and the lack of awareness. By going to Dartmouth I hope to expand these ideas of mental health awareness because it’s results could be an increase in Natives finishing high school and college creating a more educated generation.
Although one might assume that mental health problems are easy to fix, it is quite the opposite, as mental health is a very complex level of well-being that has challenged doctors for years in terms of treatment. Mary Jo Thomas, author of the article “Mental Health” in 2018, defines the topic as a “state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity” (Thomas). In essence, Thomas describes how the role of mental health and stability supports daily life. As centers have closed in communities around the country, it is difficult for some to find transportation to facilities on the other end of their city or county. And long waits to get into a clinic causes some to forget about appointments or have enough time to convince themselves that they can handle their problem on their own. The U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health recognized that mental health is plagued by disparities in availability and access more than any other field of medicine. Although the disparities are often seen in the terms of race, age, and gender, more recently, it has been concluded that these disparities are also driven by social, environmental, and economic factors.
Despite the progress in understanding the causes of mental illness and the tremendous advances in finding effective mental health treatments, far less is known about the mental health of minorities. Race, ethnicity, culture, language, geographic region, and other social factors affect the perception, availability, utilization, and, potentially, the outcomes of mental health services. Across racial and ethnic groups, a significant financial barrier also greatly affects mental health and the path to getting needed mental health care. Every society influences mental health treatment by how it organizes, delivers, and pays for mental health services. Therefore the provision of high quality, culturally and language appropriate mental health services, in locations accessible to racial and ethnic minorities, is essential to creating a more equitable
I stand out because I am invested in my future. For the past few years I have dedicated myself to my future career by taking the most difficult classes that my school has to offer. This has helped me be a better student as I have some knowledge of the classes I will be taking in college. I am an independent, organized person as I am able to juggle my classes, extracurriculars, and other activities. Another way that I am unique is my ability to take charge in a situation.
To be a trailblazer in my family means more to me than to some others. My family came from Cameroon, Africa as a family of seven. The first apartment we were able to live in was a two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment. One bedroom was for my parents and the second was shared between all five kids. Two boys on the top bunk and three girls on the bottom bunk.
Upon arriving at the University of Michigan, I, like many of my peers, thought that I had everything figured out. I thought that I knew exactly what I wanted to study, exactly what classes I wanted to take, and exactly how to do this. However, after taking classes in the subject that I thought I would major in, as well as looking further into the major requirements for the subject, I soon came to realize that I was simply wrong. While this realization terrified me to an extent, as I no longer had a degree plan, it also caused me to think further and deeper into what I was really passionate about, and what subjects I truly enjoyed studying. This led me to not only look into different course options within LSA, but also look more closely at options offered by the other various schools on campus.
Health and social care is something that I have always been passionate about. Because I have studied health and social care for the last four years I have regularly met a lot of the most vulnerable members of society through past work experiences. Through past placements I have worked with children who have special needs. This helped me develop ways of communicating with the children this could be through sign language. Because my Aunt is deaf I have taught myself basic sign language in order to communicate with her effectively.
Computers and their immense diversity have interested me thoroughly. The first time I used a computer was when I was around the age of 9, with my uncle at his workplace. I was intrigued by the user interface and wanted to find out more about computers; in terms of how they worked and what else they are able to do. Since then I have always been fascinated as to how computers work and the capabilities of each computer. In addition, at the age of 15, I got into gaming and bought a gaming pc.
