Personal Statement: My Philosophy On Organising Students

My philosophy on advising students is focused on the idea that if the person is motivated, they have the ability to control their behavior and make changes in the lives. To effectively advise students, I also believe they can find solutions to their problems if the exceptions to the problems are discussed, which will enable them to allocate their resources and create change. Therefore, my advising philosophy is focused on reality/choice therapy and solution focused brief therapy. Choice theory helps me understand why it is that my students chose path a rather than b. For example, in the Transfer Center, I constantly facilitate the transferring process to four-year institutions by informing my students the eligibility requirements to transfer to California State Universities or Universities of California. …show more content…

Though it a postmodern approach, SFBT allows the individual to create solutions for their problems. SFTB empowers the client by allowing them to formulate their goals and think of possible future solutions. This idea takes the counselor away from the perception that we can solve their problems and that we should advise them towards what steps to take next. For example, while presenting the Extended Opportunity Program & Services orientation, I had a student who was not sure when to take his transferable English course. The student asked me if it was a good idea if he took it during the summer session. So, then I asked him, “What do you think you need to do to receive a passing grade during the summer?” The student discovered his resources and decided he will attend the English tutoring sessions EOP&S offers to their students; also, the exception question led him to find out that English is one of his strengths. He created his own solutions and decided to take the course during the summer because he was going to utilized the EOP&S
