Creating a personal philosophy statement for academic advising, it takes a solid academic foundation when it comes to student development and undergraduate advising. When it comes to the growth of a new advisor there should be a guide that helps in developing their philosophy. This paper will discuss how my experience and all other academic advisors experiences should begin by reviewing the history of advisement, learning about the NACADA statement of Core Values, reflecting on the different forms of advising such as: Informational Advisement, Developmental Advisement, Faculty Advisement, and a self-development plan to organize the advisors goals and questions. When a student comes into the program, there is likely a connection between their future goals and the program choice. The advisor has a responsibility to support the student in making the right decisions on their classes and other endeavors while in the institution. Going down the line of the different student goals: we have student educational goals, student career goals, and student personal goals that factor into developmental advising. Educational goals through student advisement should begin with sitting with the student and clarifying their goals with the advisor. Advisors help clarify the students educational goals and align them with their current interests, aspirations and strengths. Through these advisement sessions, students gain an understanding of what they are looking to achieve in their institution and career goals. Action plans can really provide a structure for the advisor and student to implement all their goals into one space to guide them throughout the academic year. Development can create periodic change and revisions to occur, this relationship between the two can continue that conversation to help reassess their goals. It’s important to review goals every year to understand if the goals and progress being made are still relevant and achievable. In that interaction, the advisor can grow in understanding that an approach can work in one moment and change in another. Overall, understanding the growth and development of a student can help guide them into effective decision making throughout their college process. Faculty Advisement can be presented as guidance to students by their fellow instructors to discuss academic progress, career goals, or even external matters. Generally, we think that staff and administrators are the only members that can provide support to assist the student through their classes and experiences.
