Personal Statement: Pursuing An Art Degree

I was Born and Raised in the Dominican Republic. As I grow up I Developed interest in visual Arts. My family decided to migrate to the United States on my early teenage years, but it wasn't until was 18 I decided to enroll into the Digital Arts program at Bronx Community College where I started to explore different art mediums and the love for Photography & Fashion. Where I come from people that study art is considered privileged, or not taken seriously. There is not that much support like many other careers. When I decided to pursue an art degree, I did not received support from my family members or friends, for them art was not a reliable career. Although, I Received a lot of criticism I decided to ignore this and keep studying art. There was a point on my life where I had 3 jobs to support my studies and buy my supplies. Professor Shanks saw my vision and guided me towards getting my skills together. She did this constantly by challenging my knowledge and providing me with her honest opinion as a designer more than a professor. Not only that but she used to allow me to stay after hours on her design studio class to work. And provided me with different mediums and resources out of the regular classes syllabus and content. As I been assisting to school and taking art classes I discovered that I enjoy helping others classmates to understand the lessons, doing this on my free time. This made me realize that I would eventually like to teach design. I find soul filling when I guide those whom didn't have the commodities or support to know that they have potential to become a good designer. It takes a good instructor just like they did to me to show students that with enough dedication and effort they can become whatever they
