“So, where do you plan on going to college?” It seems like an age old question in today's society. Not only do family members ask, but teachers often pry for the answer as well. Often times, adults just assume students will go off to a university, pursue a four year degree, and then find a job. What some adults of today's era do not realize is that not every high school student wants to go to college, or needs to go. Schools should not pressure students into attending college because of college standards, costs, and job outlooks.

Some youth have the impression that a college diploma automatically means success, and not having one automatically means failure. Millions of jobs created by 2018 will not require a four-year degree (Strauss, 2012). With so many newly created jobs on the horizon, one would think that schools would attempt to entice students into preparing for these kinds of jobs. These new jobs require a certain style of teaching and learning, called CTE. CTE stands for Career and Technical Education, more commonly known as vocational education. While vocational classes and education can consist of engineering and even culinary arts, CTE is most known for classes such as welding, automobile technology, heating and cooling, construction, and plumbing. With such a variety of possibilities, CTE seems like an important part to every school's curriculum. Shockingly, about half of all high schools in the United States offer no CTE at all. With no exposure to this kind of education, many students may think that college serves as their only option after high school. And with so many students attending universities to study popular careers, work after college remains competitive and difficult to find. Meanwhile, shops search for mechanics and other workers because fewer students receive CTE and become exposed to possible
