Animals are used for testing medicines and even cosmetics everyday. Some think it’s good because then humans can be safe when using the medicine and cosmetics but others think that they barely resemble humans and animal testing does nothing but harm the animals and get almost nothing out of it. An issue that is hotly debated about it is that animals are nothing like humans so humans will have different reactions than animals. It’s clear that overall animal testing isn’t necessary and is terrible and needs to be stopped. If one had to choose then most would choose that it is good. However, research shows that animals don’t get anything out of it most of the time, and humans hardly do either.
Did you know that 95% of the animals used in testing aren’t protected by the AWA? (The Animal Welfare Act.) The AWA is a federal anti-cruelty law that protects warm blooded animals to be used in research. Yet that is only 5% of the animals used for all of it, and most of them don’t survive. For example, 95% are not treated with the 3 r's or pain relievers, minimize animal pain as much as possible, setting appropriate housing for them, or appropriate vet care. And of course everyone cares about the animals and cares about their well being and health. But no matter how hard the scientists try, the animals can still feel the stress from being in captivity their whole lives, and the pain of being subjected to numerous tests. They get so scared and have so so much anxiety because they know that every day they might be picked to be used and tested on. If us humans don’t want that than why would we let animals be treated like that? Every year over 25 million animals are used for testing. This includes mice, rats, cats, dogs, pigs, sheep, ferrets, rabbits, monkeys, chimpanzees, and the list will just go on and on.
