On the 2013 NAEP reading test, about 22 percent of eighth graders scored below the "basic" level, and only 36 percent of eighth graders were at or above grade level. This might not have happened if they got a early start on reading. If the kids start reading late in life like a grade or two later than they are supposed to then that means that they are 2 grade levels behind. So that's why it is good to get a early start in preschool. That is where you come in and read to them so they get how reading sounds and you could show them letters in the book once you are done reading it. They obviously won't be able to read but just showing them letters most of the day and bring up the reading subject as much as possible could make a difference.
