Imagine the world free of genetic diseases, where parents could control their offspring’s height, eye color, gender, and intelligence. Well, it is a reality now with the discovery of designer babies; it’s as easy as picking something off of the menu at Pizza Hut. According to Oxford dictionary, the term “Designer babies” refers to a baby whose genetic make-up has been selected in order to eradicate a particular defect, or to ensure that a particular gene is present. The designer child has been genetically engineered in the womb with in vitro fertilization (IVF) so that we can modify his or her traits or characteristics and prevent them from developing diseases. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter because we are all equal, and with this technology evolving, there will be major inequality in the world. Designer babies could lead to new discoveries, but is it ethical and right for parents to choose their babies? Genetically modified babies can be beneficial and interesting, as they can combat any hereditary diseases or autism; but it is also unethical, not natural and has dangers of manipulating human gene pool and lives. Some may agree with the idea of designer babies, as it gives parents the right to select the child’s characteristics and personalities. Having the decision to make children disease free can never be bad, or wrong as everyone wants best for their children but babies should be born naturally and not created considering its process of genetically modifying.
