“Eureka!” Thousands of years ago, Archimedes made a revolutionary discovery that changed math and science forever, and he marked it with that word. Today, with so many new types of alternative energy at our fingertips, we are on the brink of another game-changing idea that will positively impact as many lives as we allow it to: the combined use of geothermal energy and hydroelectric energy. Using these two energy sources, we can provide energy, heating, and cooling to an entire town in a clean, green way, and what better place to introduce this innovative new plan than in… Eureka! The side-by-side use of a binary geothermal power plant and a hydroelectric (also known as hydropower) power plant would bring many benefits to the Eureka, California community. The reasons for this include the environmental impact, energy consistency, and space requirements.

“Greenhouse gases” trap the sun’s thermal energy below them, causing the earth to heat up (climate change). Many forms of alternative energy produce little to no air emissions; almost all forms of alternative energy produce fewer emissions than traditional gas or coal plants. Therefore, using alternative energy can help counteract climate change and make this planet and its inhabitants healthier! Improving the lives of citizens of Eureka, California isn’t the only thing that using geothermal power and hydropower in that area would achieve, though. It would also encourage further discussion among people about how we humans can do our part in saving and preserving the planet so that generations to come will still have a safe, beautiful place to call
