Mothers, in reference to fetal protection laws, have no say when it comes to the rights of the fetus in her womb. With this, pregnant women are being deprived of their rights and the woman and child are not being equally protected. For instance, back when fetal protection laws were first initiated, anyone involved in the killing of a fetus was prosecuted. Therefore, mothers were being arrested and prosecuted when they were getting abortions based on the fact that this action involves the rights of the child. Therefore, Roe v. Wade was implemented to allow mothers the right to obtain abortions within the first trimester without getting charged for killing their child.

However, this fails to point out that most women have the choice to practice safe sex by using contraception or by remaining abstinent. Therefore, these interventions should be implemented to save the baby’s life until the mother’s life becomes at risk. It should be illegal to have abortions and fetal protection laws should be enacted. Babies should have the right to be unharmed, since God is in charge of life and death. Therefore, abortions can and should be prevented if people that did not want children used preventative measures to not get pregnant. According to the CDC, “There have been an estimated 652,639 abortions in 2014 in the United States and this number has been decreasing” (CDC, 2016). This is still a fairy high number of abortions occurring in America, but with the decrease in numbers, this is a good stepping stone in the right direction. Another intervention is testing pregnant women which can help mothers become more aware of the serious implications imposed on the baby if they take drugs while pregnant. This will allow for more healthy babies to be born due to mother’s not wanting to get prosecuted if they are taking drugs. The last intervention, selective reduction should not be used since the fetus is being destroyed to benefit the other fetuses in the womb by getting nutrients they need.
