Imagine, I am mistreated and ignored by my foster parents. The only reason they got involved in fostering was for the money and not to make a lasting impact on my life. Continuously, people put phrases into my head such as, “things will change, everything will get better, and it will all stop soon.” Have any of these words of encouragement ever been true? No. My fellow classmates say I am a “loner with no one who cares about me”. The bullying has made my grades drop, just like my self esteem. I used to have friends until they found out my father was abusive, my mother was depressed, and I am now in foster care. Support, knowledge about the real world, and undivided love from a family is something that every child needs. For example, an article called “Foster Kids” states that,“45% become homeless within a year, 35% are arrested while still in the foster care system, and 80% of prisoners in Illinois State Penitentiary spent time in foster care as children” (Bagwell). These statistics show that foster children are lacking the knowledge of what life in the real world is like. Foster children are at a high risk of not living up to the standards the real world sets.
