A hot topic in our world today, is whether or not gay couples should have the same rights as heterosexual couples. The biggest issue at hand, is whether they should have the right to marry. There are strong opinions on each side of this debate. There are some valid points to consider, but ultimately, I believe that gay couples should have the same rights as heterosexual couples.
Homosexuals deserve equal access to all the benefits available to heterosexuals, including the right to marry and have that marriage recognized by the government. Many activist groups have worked tirelessly to end discrimination against homosexuals in the workplace and also in private organizations. There are currently no federal laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation, but the U.S. Military and the Boy Scouts organization are some well known entities that have been criticized for their actions in regards to how they have treated homosexuals. Did you know that up until 2013, the Boy Scouts banned gay youth? It took until 2015 for them to lift the ban on gay scout leaders. Remember the famous “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in the US military? In 1993, President Bill Clinton introduced this policy which allowed homosexuals to serve in the military as long as they kept their sexual orientation private. In 2010, President Obama urged Congress to reverse the policy. It was repealed and now gay men and women can serve openly. Many would say that denying marriage licenses to same sex couples violates the US Constitution. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote that “The right to marry is a fundamental right inherent in the liberty of the person,” and “under..the fourteenth amendment couples of the same sex may not be deprived of that right and that liberty.” Preventing homosexual couples from marrying, denies the same rights as heterosexual couples and …show more content…

Also, they would argue that same- sex marriage should not be performed on religious grounds. They believe this because it is against their own religion. Many people will argue that they believe that marriage is only right if it is between a male and a female because that's how it it has been since ancient times. But I believe that all people should have the right to be happy and that becoming unified as one through marriage should be included in that right. Confirming your happiness and commitment to your partner is a joy in life that everyone deserves to feel. You should not be limited to certain things because of your sexual orientation. With so many negative things going on in the world, why should we deny anyone the right to be happy? After all, if we only have one life to live, why not live the life that brings you the most happiness? In 2003, a columnist for a canadian magazine wrote, “gay and lesbian couples want to be able to declare their commitment in the same way as any couple who love each other enough to marry.” In fact, supporters of this idea use phrases such as “love wins” and “love is love.” Both of which bring home the idea that whether a couple is homosexual or heterosexual, they should be able to celebrate their love for one another and acknowledge it by making the commitment of
