Gay Rights
Most people believe that they deserve the rights and freedoms they are granted by the government. However, not all citizens are afforded equal rights. Homosexuals are consistently denied rights that are taken for granted by heterosexual Americans. By not allowing homosexuals the same rights as heterosexuals, the United Sates is creating discrimination against people that identify as anything other than heterosexual. They are held at an unfair disadvantage solely because of their sexual orientation. This discrimination must stop because homosexuals should have the same rights and freedoms as heterosexuals.
Before one can start to understand the wants and needs of the homosexual community one needs to understand that sexuality is a spectrum and that gay rights effect not only the homosexual community but also the many other sexualities that are grouped within the homosexual community. Yet many people today believe and teach that homosexuality is merely a new trend that doesn’t deserve or need modern human rights. Some even deny the prejudice, abuse, and persecution that the homosexual community has endured. Homosexuality has been the target of oppression for hundreds of years and according to D’Emilio “Since the seventeenth century, homosexuality has been the target of condemnation and discriminatory laws, public policies, social customs, and cultural beliefs.” He goes on to say that this has been the cause for many in the homosexual community to keep their sexualities hidden (D'Emilio 510). People should not be afraid to be open about their sexual identity but because of prejudice and oppression many people go their entire lives without ever being able to express their sexual orientation. This is one major reason why homosexuals should have the same rights and freedoms as
