It’s about to be the third month of 2018, and there have already been 35 mass shootings around the country. Just recently, in Parkland Florida Nikolas Cruz went into Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school with an AR-15 and opened fire. 17 people died in the shooting. Because of this people of different ages all over the country have been protesting against the lack of gun control by participating in walkouts, strikes, and memorials. Emma Gonzalez has been a powerful voice along with other students in the effort to create stricter gun control laws. For years people have been speaking out about gun control, and trying to get a change. People aren’t pushing to take away guns, but to change the laws when it comes to purchasing them. Gun control doesn’t mean stripping people from their right to own firearms, it’s pushing to make it more difficult for mentally unstable, and people under the age of 21 to purchase them. In most states a person is allowed to purchase a firearm before the age of 21. In Japan a person has to go through mental evaluation, multiple tests, and a waiting period. Purchasing a weapon at 18 should be prohibited. If a person can’t buy alcohol or cigarettes legally before 21, why should they be allowed to purchase a firearm, and accessories without a thorough background check? An argument people already make against gun control, and why it shouldn’t be pushed for, is because it’s in the constitution.
