The Misconception of Guns
This year alone, there have been over 8,000 gun related incidents. According to the New York Times, without any felony on your record, domestic abuse conviction, or a few other exceptions, a patron can walk into a gun store, clear a background check, and walk out with an AR-15 style rifle, magazines, and ammunition. A permit or license is not needed to buy a gun, nor do you have to register the firearm. As many guns as needed may be purchased, seeing as Florida does not control or keep track of the amount of guns bought. Florida state laws regulating gun control are ridiculously weak and one would think more gravity would be implemented when buying something so dangerous. According to (PROCON) there are approximately 33,367 gun homicides every year in the US. Only 259 homicides of this unfortunately considerable number are justified in self defense (LA TIMES). Research has also shown that for every one person who uses a gun in self defense, nearly six people use a gun to commit a crime (Washington post). It can be inferred that these figures reveal guns are more likely to be used in a crime than in a justifiable act of self defense. There are approximately 300 million registered firearms in circulation, this can account for nearly one for every person in the United States, although only roughly a third of Americans own guns legally (LA TIMES). Without guns, how would society protect themselves against potential danger? a groundless argument that is frequently used by pro-gun lobbyist. Gun rights advocates stake their entire argument on encouraging our society to “take matters into their own hands” when it comes to their safety, but evidence shows that is not the action that produces the safest results. According to the Washington Post, “The likelihood of injury when there was a self-defense gun use (10.9%) was basically identical to the likelihood of injury when the victim took no action at all (11%) (Washington Post).
