In 1789 the United States implemented the second amendment which states "a well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Since then many Americans have used their right to purchase and own guns. According to Pew Research Center, it is hard to get an exact number on how many Americans own a gun, there are approximately 270-310 million guns in the United States. The reason there is not an exact number on gun owners is because many gun owners are not registered. The United States 229 years later, does not have as strict of gun laws as one would suspect. In fact, out of the 50 states America has, less than half require background checks for a new gun owner (Guns to Carry). It is quite different from 1789, when you could obtain a gun simply from purchasing one. Many citizens will argue that it is not as easy to get a gun today, as it was a few years ago. For instance, purchasing a gun is easier, and takes less time than voting. Also, you are able to purchase many guns off the black market for a cheaper price than buying one in gun shops. Even though buying off the black market is riskier than buying it in stores, it is the easiest way for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to get access to a gun. Unfortunately, many people feel outraged at the idea of government officials implementing even stricter gun laws. Many of those laws include customers participating in mental evaluations.
